As travellers we are now made to feel guilty about going on holiday and increasing our carbon footprint, which we are led to believe will destroy our planet, this can be something of a put off to travel anywhere. However there are ways to make your well deserved holiday eco friendly even if you go abroad.
Cycling and Hiking holidays – An ideal way to sight see but also better for the environment than using a car. You can choose cycling and hiking holidays here in the UK or all around Europe, with the only emissions you will incur is travelling to the destination.
Camping – There are now many campsites which are eco friendly, but still very comfortable accommodation and amenities using more traditional style Asian yurts. There are also plenty of activities to take part in when on a campsite like swimming, canoeing, hiking, climbing, bird-spotting, biking, horse-riding and caving all aiming to be eco friendly.
Hotels – If you’re looking for a beach holiday so you can enjoy some sun, you can be eco friendly especially if you do some research into hotels as a lot of resorts all around now are building more eco friendly hotels and adapting existing hotels to bring them up to standard.
Flights – Most large airlines like BA and Virgin off carbon offsetting when booking your flight, which means you can pay to offset your carbon footprint, with money from that going to projects to improve sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.
You shouldn’t be put off from travelling as a lot of places depend on tourism which in some places helps sustain the environment, the best advice is always to be aware what impact you are having on the environment and how you could improve it.
